MYTH Hiring a coach isn’t worth it. I ge MYTH Hiring a coach isn’t worth it.

I get it, hiring a coach can be an investment. But here’s a question for you - how much is it worth to you to live a happier, more fully expressed life? How much is it worth to you to get over obstacles that have been holding you back for years? How much is greater confidence and fulfillment worth?

My coaching has also had financial benefits for people. Like my client who had been stuck in middle-management for years, who, through coaching, developed the skills and scored his first VP position (and salary). Or another client who moved from being second-in-command in an organization where she was under-valued to leading an area in a company that was aligned with her passions. Or my other client who moved from being on the brink of being fired, to being so valued that he was given a raise.

And, while some coaches aim to work with you indefinitely, my approach is to give you the tools so that you can fly on your own, and maintain your success across time. Curious to learn more? Check out the link in my bio!

Emotional intelligence plays a pivotal role in good leadership. In the recent Lead Different podcast episode, I discuss with Nathan Schaffernoth, why emotional intelligence is so important in leadership roles.

LIFE LESSON FROM MY 7 YEAR OLD: My son loves him s LIFE LESSON FROM MY 7 YEAR OLD: My son loves him some Minecraft. He loves it so much that he has gotten pretty adept at coding in it. Every day, I’ll see him researching different commands, and creating intricate codes within the game. It’s pretty cool to witness.

Then, after he has created some sort of coding masterpiece, he’ll proudly come and show it to me to demonstrate all that it can do. I used to enthusiastically reply, “Wow - that’s awesome!” (And I truly meant it - I didn’t know that a 7 year old could actually do that).

Then, his reply would come, “What’s awesome about it?”

I would respond with a variety of things - the effort he put into it, how he got something to explode, or teleport, or create a chain of events that I wouldn’t have anticipated.

His response, “What else did you like about it?”

Again, I would add some more details, seeing his smile get brighter and brighter with each addition.

I see this as a life lesson on two levels. First - the kid knows how to savor his wins. He wants to relish every possible detail and extract every bit of pleasure out of the thing that he is enjoying. He does it on his own, but to amp it up with people who support him is even more precious. I think that’s a great reminder for all of us.

Second - it’s an excellent reminder for how to give positive feedback. I find that people tend to be a lot more specific when giving constructive criticism. However, when it comes to positive feedback, they often stop at “great job,” or “keep doing what you’re doing.” If you want to give more effective positive feedback, make sure to make it targeted so that you can reinforce the behaviors that the person did particularly well. For example, instead of saying “You were great in that meeting,” you could add, “I really liked the response you gave when they questioned your idea. You stayed confident and gave a really articulate response. I could see that you changed their minds because of that.”

Just some food for thought, courtesy of my son, Blake.

Think that staying nose-down and just doing good w Think that staying nose-down and just doing good work is going to get you noticed? While that might happen sometimes, typically, the people who are the most successful are the ones who market themselves.

It’s the case for people running a business (have you checked out my social media lately? 😊), but also for people who work inside of a business. After all, most people are so focused on their own stuff, that they might not fully realize or appreciate all that you’re doing.

I USED TO BE SHY ABOUT SHARING MY EXPERTISE: With I USED TO BE SHY ABOUT SHARING MY EXPERTISE: With a healthy dose of imposter syndrome, I used to be very reluctant to speak up. Despite all of the external indications that I was well educated, experienced, and smart, I kept a lot of my ideas and opinions to myself. After all, who was I to have an opinion, when there were so many other really smart people out there?

When I left my corporate job to start my own business in 2014, I knew that I would need to get myself out there - even though it felt really uncomfortable. My first experience was a relatively small podcast, that was really helpful for getting my feet wet, and letting me know I could actually respond intelligently during an interview. My first article was in a site called MindBodyGreen. After that, I got up the nerve to reach out to a wellness company, and was hired to do a 5-week webinar series that had 5,000 registrants.

Over time, I’ve been able to be in a number of media outlets, including the Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Fast Company, INC., Business Insider, Entrepreneur, Cosmopolitan, Essence, Wharton Business Radio, ABC News Radio, and a number of other places. Some were articles I wrote, while in others, I was quoted as an expert.

Although I was selected to be in a lot of articles, there were also many other pitches that were ignored or rejected. (In fact, there was one site where I kept getting ignored, kept persisting, and eventually found out I was sending them to the wrong email! Lol) Even though I still had some self-doubt, I keptmy larger vision in mind of what I was trying to achieve professionally (being of service and sharing knowledge to help people to achieve greater happiness and fulfillment). So, I accepted the discomfort, and did it anyway. And guess what? Now I’m finally at a point where I’ve internalized that I know my stuff, I’m good at what I do, and my voice matters!
